SYPNOPSIS :
Larry Daley is a divorced parent who has always thought that he’s been destined for something big. To replace three retiring night watchmen, Daley accepts what appears to be a menial job as a graveyard shift security guard at the museum. On the first night, he meets them at the museum and is given an instruction manual. Larry is told to read everything in the manual and do them quickly and in order, and not to let anything in or out of the museum.
That night, Larry gets bored and falls asleep at the main desk. He wakes up to notice that the Tyrannosaurus skeleton is missing, and Larry finds it drinking from a water fountain. As the skeleton chases Larry around the museum, Larry hides under the main desk, and reads the top line of the instruction manual, which says, “Throw the bone.” The dinosaur wants to play fetch with one of its own bones.

After getting the dinosaur out of the way, Larry finds that many other things are also leaving their exhibits. The second line of the manual reads, “Lock up the lions or they will eat you.” Larry goes to the Africa exhibit to lock up the lions, and, when he gets to the second door, he finds that his keys are missing. A monkey, named Dexter by the guards, stole Larry’s keys and waves it at him. Larry tries to get the monkey to give him the keys, but instead, Dexter bites him on the nose, and tears up the instruction manual.
Trying to figure out what to do, Larry is suddenly roped up by a miniature cowboy named Jedidiah and railroad workers from the Wild West diorama, who dislike the guards. Larry escapes, only to be faced with Octavius and hundreds of members from a miniature Roman Army. Theodore Roosevelt, to whom the museum is dedicated, rides up, rescues Larry and helps him restore order. Teddy also explains that the museum comes to life because of an ancient supernatural Egyptian tablet.
The next day, the museum director, Dr. McPhee, asks Larry to look at the railroad exhibit with Jedidiah. Larry sees that Octavius is locked up in a miniature pillory, and McPhee tells Larry that whatever he is doing is not funny. The former guards suggest that he learn about the exhibits, since there’s no duplicate of the manual destroyed by Dexter. The next night, Larry comes to work armed with a few solutions, including fake keys for Dexter, gum for the Easter Island Head and fire for the Neanderthals.
Everything fails when one of the former security guards unlocks the Africa exhibit, and the monkey gets Larry’s keys to unlock everything in the museum. The Neanderthals’ fire gets out of control, and Larry puts it out with a nearby fire extinguisher. Again, Theodore Roosevelt helps him, and everything is restored. Unfortunately, one of the Neanderthals manages to climb out of the window, and when the sun rises, the Neanderthal turns to dust and is swept up by a street sweeper.
Dr. McPhee tells Larry that he is fired for the damage done to the Neanderthal exhibit, but Larry manages to persuade him to let him try one more night. One of the docents, Rebecca, is writing a dissertation on Sacajawea, and Larry tries to explain what happens at night, but she thinks he’s mocking her. That night, Larry brings with him his son, Nick, to show him all the amazing things that occur during Larry’s shift.
What Larry expects to happen does not happen, for the former night guards stole the Egyptian tablet and many other valuables in an attempt to get back at the museum for firing them, all the while framing Larry. He and his son find the tablet and bring everything to life, but Nick and Larry get locked up in Ahkmenrah’s exhibit by the three guards. Ahkmenrah’s protectors try to kill Nick and Larry, so Larry opens up the sarcophagus. Ankmenrah stops the guards from attacking Larry and asks for his tablet. Larry explains what happened, and the three go to rescue it.
Managing to befriend Atilla the Hun, Larry explains to all the inhabitants of the museum that he needs the tablet back, or they will never be alive in the museum—partying or fighting—again. He sends off several parties to look for the three former night watchmen and retrieve the tablet. One former guard escapes, with the tablet, and Larry manages to catch and stop him. With the help of Ankmenrah, Larry gets all the inhabitants back to the museum, and Rebecca sees the procession as it marches back from Central Park.
The sun rises, and Rebecca, Larry, and Nick find the museum in a huge mess. They manage to clean the museum, but Larry is fired by Dr. McPhee because of various news video clips about the things that went on that night, such as the “mysterious” evidence that there was a dinosaur walking around. When the museum director leaves his office and finds it full of visitors who are curious about the recent news stories, Larry gets his job back.
That night, there is a party at the museum, and Larry views it from the balcony, watching everyone play, including his son

Dexter is not a capuchin, because its the hall of AFRICAN mammals and capuchins live in Central and South America, and second of all, capuchins are New World monkeys and Dexter is an Old World monkey.
except they say on the tour that he’s capuchin.
yeah thats really true . thanks for the fact …
Interestingly, though, Dexter is in the Hall of African Mammals. Capuchins are New World Monkeys (native to Central and South America), as opposed to Old World Monkeys (native to Africa).
